Ramboll’s Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) shows single use (disposable) paper-based systems have a significant advantage over reusables.

Thanks to a certified and 3^rd party reviewed comprehensive Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) study carried out by Ramboll, an independent Danish consultancy, the science is now challenging the common misconception that reusable food and drink packaging is more sustainable than single-use paper packaging. In 6 of 9 categories, including climate change and water usage, single-use paper products performed better than reusable tableware.

Reusable packaging requires industrial washing systems that consume energy, water and detergents. Unlike paper-based single-use products, which are renewable, recyclable and use less energy and fresh water – an increasingly scarce resource. Ramboll’s Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) study clearly shows that single-use paper-based systems have a “very significant” environmental advantage over multiple use systems in real world conditions.

NOTE: The Ramboll studies were conducted to a much higher standard than most (ISO14044 accredited and 3^rd party reviewed) making them highly credible. The studies were conducted for the European market and include a range of single use and reusable packaging used for foodservice – not just a cup or cutlery.

Huhtamaki recognized as a Climate Leader for three consecutive years

Huhtamaki has achieved recognition as a Climate Leader in Europe, a commendation bestowed by the esteemed Financial Times. This prestigious acknowledgment is reserved for top-tier European companies with revenues exceeding €40 million, selected from a pool of nominees. The selection criteria are stringent, focusing on companies that have significantly reduced their Scope 1 and 2 emissions intensity between 2017 and 2022.

Our inclusion in the list was propelled by the validation of our climate targets by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and our CDP Climate score. Notably, achieving a CDP Climate score of at least B- is mandatory for inclusion, a threshold that we surpassed with our B rating.
